[1] Rhapsody Gets Positive Responses From Seeded Developers

Apple's Rhapsody Developer Release received rave reviews from software developers who were seeded with an early version of the operating system, including AAA+ Software, Anderson Financial Systems, Caffeine Software, Dantz Development, Omni Development, P & L Systems, Stone Design Corporation, VVI Data Control Specialists, Yrrid Incorporated, and Metrowerks. [2] Power Macintosh Processor Upgrade Kits Available

Apple is now shipping the Power Macintosh 233-MHz Processor Upgrade Kit, which allows selected Power Macintosh and Workgroup Server models to be upgraded to a faster PowerPC microprocessor and faster cache module. The kit can improve the overall performance of these systems by as much as 158 percent. It's currently available through the Apple Developer Hardware Purchase Program.

[4] Garner Publicity Through Apple's Success Story Program

Apple is currently developing a web-based database of success stories that will "go live" next month. It enables journalists from around the world to find great stories quickly for print or broadcast, and it provides developers with sales-enhancing publicity. Each story lists the software and hardware used and has direct links to the manufacturers. You can submit success stories through an online form at this web site:

[5] List Your Applications on the AppleScript Web Site

Apple has a web-based listing of AppleScript-enabled applications that helps customers find third-party applications that can be used in building custom solutions. You can take advantage of this free publicity by sending your product information to sal@apple.com. (Specify whether your application is AppleScript scriptable, recordable, and/or attachable.)

Apple Computer Australia just launched over 50 AppleCentre stores throughout the country, and each will carry a broad range of Apple products including Macintosh software, computers, and peripherals. [7] A New Apple Sales Promotion and Price Reduction

Apple is offering a variety of purchase incentives, including cash-back rebates, to customers who purchase selected portable, desktop, and peripheral products between October 11 and January 16. Apple is also reducing prices on computers in the PowerBook 3400 and Power Macintosh 8600 lines by up to US$ 1,000 in the United States and Canada, effective October 11.

[8] Apple Mirrors Microsoft's Support Policies

Apple announced that it's changing its support policies to include free support on the web, free support from Apple's automated phone response system, free phone support for the first 90 days of ownership, and phone support at US$ 35 per call after the first 90 days of ownership.

[9] Stagecast to Bring Apple's Cocoa Technology to Market

Stagecast Software, a K-12 software company, announced that it will develop commercial products based on Apple's Cocoa technology. Apple's latest design release of Cocoa for the Mac OS, version DR2, can be downloaded free of charge at these web sites:

[10] Apple Reports Fourth Fiscal Quarter Results

Apple announced results of its fourth fiscal quarter, which ended September 26, 1997. For the quarter, Apple reported revenues of US$ 1.6 billion and a net loss of US$ 161 million. The quarterly loss, before special restructuring charges and the purchase of the Mac OS license from Power Computing, is half that of the prior quarter. Cost-cutting initiatives reduced expenses to US$ 353 million, compared to US$ 505 million in the year-ago quarter and US$ 408 million in the June quarter.

[11] One-Day Java Seminar, November 8, Cupertino

Java Express is a one-day seminar designed to teach people about Java, while raising money for worthwhile San Francisco Peninsula charities. It will be held on Saturday, November 8 at Apple's R? campus in Cupertino, California, from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The seminar features an overview of Java technical and business issues, tutorials on writing Java applications and applets, and demos of development tools and Java programs running on both Windows 95 and Macintosh.

[12] Rhapsody Database Tool Now Available Free of Charge

OpenBase International announced that it is releasing the single-user version of OpenBase, an SQL database engine, to any Rhapsody user or developer, free of charge. The firm describes this product as "a high-performance SQL engine that handles all of the complexities of data storage and multiuser communication for end-user applications."

[14] MacTalent Offering Free Job Postings and Searches

MacTalent, an online employment registry exclusively for Macintosh professionals, is now offering free job postings for Macintosh-related positions. Employers can also search the database of job seekers at no charge. Employers can post jobs in their online database at no charge by filling out a simple form at the MacTalent site:

[15] Joy for Rhapsody DR1 Tool Extension Released

AAA+ Software announced the release of Joy for Rhapsody, an extension to the Rhapsody suite of development tools. With Joy, you can create full-featured applications without compiling any code. A free, fully enabled evaluation version of Joy Explorer ships on the Rhapsody DR1 Demo CD that Apple is seeding to Macintosh developers.
